Most drivers hear the word warranty and assume they are protected. The details matter, though. Coverage depends on who issued the warranty, what it includes and what conditions you must meet. This guide explains the basics so you can ask better questions before and after any repair.

What a Warranty Is

A warranty is a written promise from a manufacturer, seller or repair shop to fix or replace something if it fails because of a defect or poor workmanship during a stated period. It is different from insurance, which pays for sudden losses such as accidents, theft or storm damage.

Three Warranties You Will Hear About

Manufacturer Warranty

Comes with a new vehicle and covers defects in materials and factory workmanship, usually for a set number of years or miles. Many automakers offer separate coverage for the powertrain, corrosion and, on EVs, the high-voltage battery.

Extended Service Contract

Often called an extended warranty, this is purchased separately. Terms vary widely, and many contracts list covered components rather than covering everything.

Repair Shop Warranty

Covers the work a shop performed. Collision repair shops often warrant workmanship and paint for a stated period or for as long as you own the vehicle. Parts may be covered by the part manufacturer's own warranty.

What Warranties Typically Cover

• Duration: Is it time-based, mileage-based or for as long as you own the car?
• Who backs it: The manufacturer, the dealer, the shop or a third party?
• Where claims are handled: Must you return to the same shop?
• Transferability: Does coverage continue if you sell the car?
• Claim steps: What proof and paperwork are required?
