Quarter Panel Repairs and Replacement

Often, yes — and where it's possible it's the best outcome, because the panel your car was built with stays on the car. Shallow damage away from the panel edges, without sharp creases or torn metal, is usually repairable in place.

What rules it out is damage at an edge, metal that's been stretched or torn, previous filler in the same area, or corrosion — rust at the wheel arch in particular tends to mean the affected metal has to come out rather than be covered up. We'll tell you which situation you're in once we can see it properly.

Sectioning means cutting away part of the panel and joining a matching partial section in its place, rather than removing the whole thing. It is not a shortcut. Manufacturers define where a panel may be sectioned on each specific vehicle, and those points are chosen so the repaired structure behaves the way the original does in a future impact.

Where the procedure permits sectioning, sectioning is the repair. What matters isn't whether your car was sectioned or fully replaced — it's whether the route taken is the one the published procedure for your VIN specifies.

Because a fender bolts on and a quarter panel doesn't. A front fender is fastened to the car and comes off with hand tools. A quarter panel is welded to the body and forms part of the structure, so replacing one means cutting and welding where it joins the roof, the pillar and the trunk opening.

The paint side is bigger too. A quarter panel meets the roof, the door and the bumper, so refinishing it properly means blending into several adjacent panels rather than painting one. Two dents that look identical in a photo can price very differently depending on which end of the car they're at.

That's the intention, and on a quarter panel it takes more work than most repairs. We spray a test card and compare it against your car before anything is applied, then blend the colour into the neighbouring panels rather than stopping at a gap — which is the only way a repair stays invisible on a metallic or pearl finish.

It's also why a quarter panel repair often shows three or four panels being painted on the estimate. That isn't padding. It's the difference between a repair you can't see and one you can spot from across a car park.

Not automatically. The panel is part of the structure, but plenty of quarter panel damage is confined to the panel itself and doesn't extend into what's behind it.

What we won't do is assume either way. The area behind the panel is inspected once there's access to it, and where there's any indication of movement it goes on a measuring system and gets compared against the published specification for your vehicle. A quarter panel that looks right after repair isn't evidence that what's underneath it does.

It can, and we'd rather say so than pretend otherwise. Refinished panels can be identified with an inexpensive paint depth gauge, which dealers and careful buyers use, and repair history is something a buyer may ask about or discover. Anyone who promises you a repair leaves no trace at all is telling you what you want to hear.

What you can control is the quality and the documentation. A repair carried out to the manufacturer's published procedure, with genuine parts, correct joining methods, corrosion protection restored and the work recorded, is a very different proposition to one that wasn't — both to drive and to explain to a buyer. Keep the paperwork. It's worth more than you'd think.
