Uber and Lyft vehicle standards — what actually puts you offline

Both platforms inspect your car, and both can stop you accepting rides over damage. The rules differ between them, and they differ by city. Here's what each one looks at, what we fix to clear it, and where to check the current requirements for your market.

Vehicle age Model year cutoff Set per city, and stricter on premium tiers. Los Angeles has its own cutoff. Same idea, set per market — and not necessarily the same year as Uber's.
Periodic inspection Recurring, not one-time Required on a recurring basis, and again when you add a vehicle, change city, or fail a prior check. Same triggers. Letting an inspection record lapse can put you offline even if the car is fine.
Body and cosmetic damage Where most drivers get caught Publishes cosmetic guidance covering vehicle appearance. Visible damage is a common cause of a failed check. Standards are less explicitly published, which in practice means more is left to the inspector's judgement.
Premium tiers Comfort, Black, Lux Cosmetic and vehicle standards are tighter than on the standard tier. Same — Lux in particular holds a higher cosmetic bar.
If you fail The part that costs money You can't accept rides until it's resolved and re-verified. Same. Every day between the fail and the fix is unpaid.
