Mazda uses a painting process it calls Takuminuri to create colors that look hand-painted. Soul Red Crystal and Machine Gray are the best-known examples. They are admired for their depth, and feared by refinishers for their complexity.
Soul Red Crystal uses layered coats: a reflective layer with fine flakes, a translucent colored layer and clear. The final color depends on the thickness and uniformity of each layer. A small change in application can make a repair look darker or lighter.
Machine Gray is designed to resemble machined metal, with tightly packed metallic flakes. Getting the flakes to lie the same way as the factory finish is the challenge.

Multi-layer colors require more materials and time.
