What's actually different about repairing a Tesla

Teslas aren't built like other cars, and they can't be repaired like other cars. The parts rules are stricter, large sections of the structure are cast rather than assembled, and the driver-assistance systems need recalibrating afterwards. Here's what that means for your repair.

New parts, ordered directly from Tesla. Nothing else.

Tesla does not permit used, recycled, aftermarket, or third-party replacement parts on their vehicles. Not "prefers" — does not permit, because a substitute part can compromise structural integrity and occupant safety.

This is worth knowing when an insurer's estimate comes back specifying aftermarket panels. We order new from Tesla, and we'll take that argument to your carrier for you.

Cast sections get replaced, not repaired

Tesla builds large parts of the underbody as single-piece aluminum castings rather than assemblies of stamped panels. It's why the cars are stiff and quick to build — and it changes the repair entirely.

You can't section or straighten a casting the way you would a conventional rail. Repair options are limited and defined by Tesla, which is why damage that looks moderate can turn into a much larger job than the same impact on a steel unibody.

On some models, the battery is the structure

Where Tesla builds the pack as a structural member, it isn't simply bolted underneath — it's carrying load. That restricts what can be worked near it and rules out heat in that zone entirely.

It also means any underbody impact gets the pack inspected, even when nothing is visible from outside. Assuming pack damage rather than checking for it is one of the things that turns a repairable Tesla into an insurance write-off.

Model S and X are aluminum-intensive

Aluminum behaves nothing like steel. Steel has memory and returns towards shape when worked correctly; aluminum work-hardens as it moves, cracks if pushed too far, and needs controlled heat and a slower technique.

It also has to be repaired in a bay isolated from steelwork, or embedded steel particles cause corrosion in the panels months later. We're equipped with OEM-approved aluminum tooling and a dedicated aluminum area.

The high-voltage system comes down first

Before anyone touches the body, the high-voltage system is de-energized and locked out, and left for the manufacturer-specified period so the capacitors fully discharge. Only then does work begin, with insulated tools and rated protective equipment.

Autopilot has to be recalibrated

Tesla's driver-assistance systems run on cameras mounted around the car — in the windshield, the pillars, the fenders. Replace a windshield or disturb the front fascia and those cameras need recalibrating to Tesla specification before the systems read the road correctly again.

Skipping it doesn't throw a warning light. It leaves Autopilot quietly aiming at the wrong place — which you'd only discover at the moment you needed it to work.
