Hail leaves dozens or hundreds of small, round dents across the hood, roof and trunk lid. In most cases the paint is not broken, which means the panels can be restored with paintless dent repair (PDR): our technicians work each dent out from behind the panel with specialized rods and light boards, so your original factory finish stays in place. No filler, no repaint, no color-match risk, and the car's value is better protected.
Southern California does see hail during winter storms, and many of the hail cars we repair were damaged on trips to Arizona, Texas or the mountains. Wherever it happened, the repair and the insurance process are the same.
Light hail with a few dozen small dents is often repaired in a day or two. Moderate to heavy hail, with dents on every horizontal panel, typically costs in the low to mid thousands and can take one to two weeks. Very heavy hail on aluminum hoods and roofs may require panel replacement. Because most hail claims fall under comprehensive coverage, your out-of-pocket cost is usually your deductible. We give you a written estimate after a free inspection.
Many newer vehicles use aluminum hoods, roofs and liftgates. Aluminum is harder to push than steel and needs specific PDR technique and, if a panel must be replaced, an isolated aluminum repair process. See our aluminum vehicle repair page and our guide to repairing hail damage on Tesla cars.
Hail is usually covered under comprehensive coverage, not collision. You pay your comprehensive deductible and the insurer covers the rest of the approved repair.
Most can, as long as the paint is not cracked and the technician can reach the back of the panel. Dents on panel edges, sharp creases and some aluminum panels may need conventional repair and paint.
Light hail can be finished in one to two days. Heavy hail on many panels usually takes one to two weeks, longer if panels or glass have to be ordered.
Yes. Unrepaired hail damage lowers trade-in and resale value and is noted on inspections. If you received an insurance payment and did not repair the car, a future hail claim on the same panels may be reduced.
