ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: the cameras, radar units and ultrasonic sensors behind features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and 360-degree cameras. Each sensor has to point at an exact angle relative to the car's thrust line. If it is off by even a degree, the system can brake late, miss a car in your blind spot or pull you toward the lane line.
Calibration is the process of aiming those sensors back to the manufacturer's specification. Depending on the vehicle, that means a static calibration in the shop using printed targets placed at measured distances, a dynamic calibration on the road with a scan tool connected, or both.
Automakers publish calibration as a required step in their repair procedures, and insurers routinely pay for it when it is documented. Skipping it is one of the most common shortcuts on cheap repairs, and it is also a liability: a misaimed system may not stop the car when it should. Because we are an I-CAR Gold Class, OEM-certified shop, calibrations are written into the estimate from day one and billed to your insurer with the supporting documentation.
We calibrate systems on most makes we repair, including Toyota Safety Sense, Honda Sensing, Hyundai and Kia SmartSense, Nissan Safety Shield, Ford Co-Pilot360, GM driver-assist systems, Subaru EyeSight and the camera and radar suites on Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. EV and hybrid owners can read more on our EV and hybrid collision repair page.
Most single-system calibrations take one to three hours. Vehicles that need both static and dynamic calibration, or several sensors, can take most of a day. When calibration is part of a collision repair it is included in your completion date.
In most cases, yes, when the calibration is required by the manufacturer's repair procedure and documented on the estimate. We include the OEM procedure with the estimate so your adjuster can approve it.
You can usually drive it, but the affected safety features may not work or may react incorrectly. Treat the warning as a sign that automatic braking or lane assist cannot be relied on until it is calibrated.
Yes. If your windshield was replaced elsewhere and the camera was not recalibrated, bring the car in and we will scan and calibrate it.
Calibration is performed with every collision repair at our North Hollywood, Van Nuys and Venice shops. Call (818) 505-1442 to check availability for stand-alone calibrations.
