The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has used body-on-frame construction since its origins as an off-road vehicle. Nearly every other current Mercedes-Benz passenger car and SUV, from the C-Class to the GLS, uses unibody construction.
On the G-Class, the body mounts to a separate ladder frame. After a collision, the frame is measured independently from the body, and body mounts are inspected. The G-Class's upright body and exposed hinges and trim also make panel alignment very visible.
Unibody Mercedes-Benz vehicles use a mix of high-strength steels and aluminum. Many aluminum parts, especially castings, are not straightened at all; they are replaced. Steel parts may be straightened within Mercedes-Benz limits.
Electronic measuring compares the vehicle to Mercedes-Benz data. It reveals shifts that are not visible and guides the repair decision.
Many Mercedes models use air suspension. Lifting and mounting these vehicles on a bench requires specific steps to avoid damaging the system.
No. The GLS is a unibody SUV.
Generally not castings; some sheet parts may be repairable within limits.
Suspension or structural damage may be the cause. Have it inspected.
